Open the Synology web UI via IP address in a browser > open Storage Manager > select HDD/SSD.
For each drive > select History > scroll down and check the graph for Bad Sector Count. If a drive has any bad sectors, replace this drive first.
At the Synology, remove a drive from the device > remove the old disk from the caddy and fit the replacement > insert the drive back into the Synology.
Return to the Synology web UI > open Storage Manager > select Storage Pool > Action dropdown, select Repair > select the new drive > Next > OK > Apply.
Prerequisites
DSM Version 7.2 or newer.
Encryption key for all Active Backup for Business backups from Mark Whitman.
[ In the Synology DSM console ]
Login with a user with admin permissions.
Go to Control Panel > Update and Restore. Check that the DSM version is fully up-to-date.
Open Package Center > search for active, find Active Backup for Business > select Install > Done.
Open Package Center > search for machine, find Virtual Machine Manager > Yes > select Install > Done.
Select Activate > tick I have read... > Next > Create a Synology Account.
Name: Interm IT
User Type: Business (commercial use)
Company Name: <SchoolName>
Company size: 251 - 1000
Contact Email: intermit@<schoolDomain>
Password: <CurrentIntermAdmin>
Select Next > login to the emails for your intermit@ account > copy and paste the verification code > Next.
Tick I agree... > Submit > Sign in > OK.
[ In the ESXi console ]
Login to ESXi > Manage > Services tab > search for tsm > select TSM > Actions menu > Policy > Start and stop with host > select TSM again > Start.
Select TSM-SSH > Actions menu > Policy > Start and stop with host > select TSM-SSH again > Start.
For each VM:
Check VM can be shut down before proceeding!
Do not shut down Domain Controllers remotely as you may lose connection!
This process will take up to 10 minutes per VM.
Left pane, select Virtual Machines > right-click on VM > Guest OS > select Shut down > wait for VM to be offline.
Right-click on VM > Edit settings > VM Options tab > expand Advanced > under Configuration Parameters, select Edit Configuration.
In the Search box, enter ctk > if ctkEnabled is present, continue to the next section.
Select + Add parameter > at the bottom of the Key column, replace Click to edit key with ctkEnabled > in the Value column, replace Click to edit value with true.
Select + Add parameter > at the bottom of the Key column, replace Click to edit key with scsi0:0.ctkEnabled > in the Value column, replace Click to edit value with true.
Repeat step 13 for depending on the number of VHDs within the VM (scsi0:1.ctkEnabled / scsi0:2.stkEnabled) > OK > Save.

Proceed to Step 2 to configure a VM.
Prerequisites
The Active Backup for Business package should be installed on the Synology (see section ABB - Installing and Configuring Active Backup for Business for ESXi VM Backups)

Login with a user with admin permissions.
Open the Active Backup for Business app.
Select a VM to backup > Create Task > set Task name to the VM name > Next > select ActiveBackupforBusiness > Next > tick Enable compression... > tick Enable encryption... > enter the encryption key provided by Mark Whitman > Next > tick all checkboxes > Next >Â

Next > select Scheduled Backup > Weekly, Every day at 00:00 > specify allowed backup times.
Next > tick Enable retention policy > select Advanced retention policy > Set Rules > set the following rules based on the server being backed up:
For servers storing user data (K9Server / K9Server-FS / K9Server-ADM etc.)
Keep all versions for: 1 days
Keep...version of the day for: 30 days
Keep...version of the week for: 8 weeks
Keep...version of the month for: 4 months
Keep...version of the year for: Untick
> OK > Next > tick the administrators to allow restores to be completed by (IntermAdmin) > Next > Done.
For servers not storing user data (K9Server-RDS / K9Server-APP / K9Server-PRT)
Keep all versions for: 1 days
Keep...version of the day for: 14 days
Keep...version of the week for: 8 weeks
Keep...version of the month for: Untick
Keep...version of the year for: Untick
> OK > Next > tick the administrators to allow restores to be completed by (IntermAdmin) > Next > Done.
Store the downloaded encryption key in a dedicated Synology Keys folder in Interm IT.
[ In the Synology DSM console ]
Login with a user with admin permissions.
Go to Control Panel > under System, Notification.
Under Sender email, select Set Up > under Service Provider, select Outlook > Sign In.
Login with the school's intermit@ account > tick Consent on behalf... > Accept > Agree > Save.
Scoll down to Email Settings > Subject prefix > enter DSM-IIT<SensoID> (e.g. DSM-IIT123) > Apply.
Select the Rules tab > select Add > enter the Rule name as Interm SD Notifications.
Next to the column header Level, click the checkbox twice to clear it.
Expand Active Backup for Business > tick the following items:
Critical Backup task unsuccessful.
Critical Backup verification unsuccessful
Info Restoration task completed
Warning Restoration task partially completed
Critical Restoration task unsuccessful
Warning Virtual machine backup task partially completed
Critical Virtual machine restoration failed.
> Add.
Select the Email tab > under the Recipient Profiles section > select Add > under Rules, select Interm SD Notifications > under Email, enter sd@intermit.co.uk > Add.
Note: To test the sending of emails, select the sd@intermit.co.uk entry > Send Test Email.
